Course Expectations
1. Course Overview
Stemlar Academy is committed to providing a flexible, rigorous, and personalized learning experience for all students. Our asynchronous model allows learners to progress at their own pace while meeting Ministry of Education standards. Each course is designed to promote critical thinking, independent inquiry, and subject mastery. Students are expected to engage actively with course materials, complete assignments by due dates, and communicate regularly with their instructors.
2. Attendance & Participation
While our courses are asynchronous, regular and meaningful participation is essential. Students must log in and engage with the course platform consistently. This includes watching instructional videos, participating in discussion boards where applicable, completing activities, and submitting assessments. Extended inactivity (defined as 14 consecutive days without engagement) may result in a warning, academic penalty, or removal from the course. Students should notify instructors in advance of any planned absence.
3. Deadlines and Pacing Expectations
Each course has a suggested pacing guide designed to help students complete the course within a reasonable timeframe (typically 4–12 weeks). Students are responsible for submitting assignments and assessments according to the suggested timeline. Failure to maintain progress may delay course completion, impact report issuance, or require re-enrollment. Extensions may be granted for valid reasons with prior approval, but habitual delays may result in additional fees or academic review.
4. Academic Integrity
Academic honesty is foundational to learning. Students must complete all work independently unless explicitly instructed to collaborate. Plagiarism, cheating, impersonation, and use of unauthorized assistance are strictly prohibited. All submitted work must be the original creation of the student. Violations may result in a failing grade for the assignment, removal from the course, or further disciplinary action. AI tools may only be used with explicit teacher permission and must be cited where applicable.
5. Communication & Support
Students are encouraged to communicate regularly with their instructor for feedback, clarification, and support. Instructors will respond to inquiries within 48 hours (Monday to Friday). All communication should be respectful, constructive, and professional. Parents and guardians of students under 18 are welcome to reach out for updates. Technical support is available through our help desk during school hours.
6. Assessment & Evaluation
Student learning will be evaluated through a variety of assessments, including quizzes, essays, projects, labs, and final evaluations. Teachers use Ontario’s Growing Success policy to assess and report student progress. Formative (ongoing) and summative (final) assessments contribute to the final grade. Late or missed assessments may result in academic consequences unless justified and approved in advance.
7. Final Evaluations & Report Cards
Final evaluations may consist of an exam, culminating task, or final project and are mandatory for course completion. Students must complete final evaluations under the conditions outlined by the teacher. Upon successful course completion, a provincial report card will be issued within 5–10 business days. For OSSD students, final marks will be submitted to OUAC/OCAS and updated on the Ontario Student Transcript (OST).
8. Withdrawal & Refund Policy
Students may withdraw from a course within 7 days of enrollment for a partial refund. After this period, tuition is non-refundable. Students who withdraw after completing more than 50% of the course will not receive a refund or transcript entry unless exceptional circumstances apply. Refund requests must be submitted in writing and will be reviewed by administration.
9. Code of Conduct
Students must maintain a respectful and inclusive learning environment. Discrimination, harassment, or abusive behavior of any kind will not be tolerated. All community members — students, parents, and staff — are expected to interact with courtesy and uphold the values of Stemlar Academy. Any violations may result in academic or administrative consequences, including removal from the course.
10. Technical Requirements
Students are responsible for ensuring they have reliable internet access, a functioning computer, and required software for the course. Assignments must be submitted in an approved format (typically PDF, DOCX, or via the platform). Instructors are not responsible for technical issues arising from personal device failure or insufficient preparation. It is advised that students back up their work regularly.
